KINDNESS IN THE WORKPLACE

Aim: To define equity, equality, diversity and inclusivity in science and how these can be improved at the level of HDR students.

Outline: While great strides have been made to address and improve diversity and equality within science, there is still an imbalance of the representation of women, people of colour, and the LGTBQ+ community members in science. For instance, women represent 60% of PhD students in Australia but only 20% of scientists in leadership positions. We would like to run a workshop with leading scientists throughout UWA and Australia who are at the forefront of pushing for a more equitable scientific community. For example: Head of the Australia and New Zealand Society of Immunology (ASI) Women’s Initiative Dr Kylie Quinn promotes gender equity in the immunology community to improve career opportunities for women. This workshop will define what equity, equality, diversity and inclusivity means in the science world, discuss how these have been improved so far in the scientific community, and how we as the next generation of scientists can improve this kindness throughout our scientific careers.

Outcome: Students will gain knowledge on equity and diversity in science and walk away with useful tactics that can be used to improve inclusivity in the science community.
